Exposing the power of South Korea’s multibillion-dollar beauty industry and its impact on the country’s culturally conditioned young women.
Los Angeles-based journalist and podcaster Elise Hu spent three years as the (first) Seoul Bureau Chief of broadcast media group NPR. It took Elise significantly less time to learn that less than skin-deep perfection was considered a heinous crime against beauty in this part of the world.
In her new book, FLAWLESS: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital, Elise takes a deep but accessible dive into the South Korean beauty industry, one which even has an influence on pre-school-age children.
Join us for a pre-Christmas (but definitely not turkey!) 3-course lunch at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club to hear Elise in conversation with WiPS committee member Lesley Hobbs and learn more about “pretty privilege” and the socio-economic and political impacts of this US$625+ billion global industry.
